Desired Learner Outcomes: The learner will be expected to show proficiency in the following areas: Linear relations and functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, the nature of graphs, polynomial and rational functions, the trigonometric functions, the graph of trigonometric functions, conics, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, combinatorics and probability, and statistics with data analysis.

Text: Advanced Mathematical Concepts; Pre-calculus with Applications. Glencoe

Format: Since different students learn in different ways, teaching techniques will be varied so as to allow all learners to take advantage of the learning process. The instructor will use lecture, visual, discussion, group work, and technology in order to enhance the students ability to understand and grasp the concepts of Algebra III.

Materials: Every student needs to have a notebook solely for math. A three-ring binder is preferred. Homework or quizzes that are turned in with anything other than pencil will not be accepted. Tests taken in pen will automatically count off ten points. I don’t like frayed edges, but that won’t count. Since colleges are now using more technology in the classroom, it is strongly suggested that students purchase their own Ti-83 plus calculators. It will be benificial both for this year and in future math classes. You are required to bring your book to class every day unless told otherwise.

Agenda: Each student’s agenda should be brought to class everyday. If a student wants to leave the classroom, he/she cannot do so without their agenda. If a student does not bring their agenda to class, then I am required to give detention to that student if they ask to leave.

Grading Policy: Tests that are given will be given at mid-chapter or at the end of the chapter. The test will cover the notes and labs that the students have had and will have some applications of the concepts covered in each chapter. Quizzes will cover 2-3 sections. I will not quiz or test you over what I have not taught you, so take good notes. I will also grade homework, give quizzes, give pop quizzes, and check the problem of the day at any time. The required testing days are Monday and Thursday, so major tests will be given on those days. The grading policy will be as follows:

Tests- 40%

Pop quizzes- 10%

Quizzes- 25%

Midterm- 10%

Final- 15%

If there is a change in the grading policy, parents will be notified. If the student misses an assignment due to an absence, then the student will have 5 school days from the day they return to make-up any missed work. If the absence is unexcused, then any make-up work will count for 75% of the original grade.

Class Expectations:

Students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in the student being counted tardy. I don’t care if the hallways are one way, figure it out and get to my class on time.

Students are expected to go to the bathroom before class begins. If I am teaching, then you will not leave the classroom unless it is an emergency.

Books must be covered at all times. If you do not have a covered book, you will receive a detention.

Respect the process. I have the right to teach. Students have the right to learn. You don’t have the right to interfere with either.

There will be no talking at all during a test or quiz. One offense will result in a detention, the next offense will result in a grade of zero for the test or quiz.

Have fun.

Extra Help: I will be glad to stay and help students at their request. I will be able to make appointments with students during 3rd or 7th period or some days before or after school. I have no problem giving help during these times, but I will only do so at the student’s request.
